Heroin is a semi-synthetic opioid. It is the 3,6-diacetyl derivative of morphine and is synthesised from it by acetylation. The white crystalline form is commonly the hydrochloride salt, diacetylmorphine hydrochloride. To other substances heroin comes out on top for being the most addictive. Heroin is highly addictive because it enters the brain so rapidly. It particularly affects those regions of the brain responsible for producing physical dependence.

It is illegal to sell, manufacture, or possess heroin in the United States.  In the United States, heroin is a Schedule I drug (in a group of highly addictive drugs) Popular street names for heroin include dope, diesel, smack, scag, black tar, junk and H.

In North Texas Mexican black tar (MBT) heroin is still the primary threat in North Texas and is readily available throughout. MBT heroin is shipped to the East, Southeast and Midwest United States through the greater Dallas Fort Worth area. In the last year, there has been an increase in the availability and purity of heroin from Mexico in south Texas.

Any method of heroin use such as snorting, smoking, swallowing, or injecting the drug can lead to addiction and cause immediate harm.  Heroin rapidly enters the brain. It slows down the way you think, slows down reaction time, and slows down memory. This affects the way you act and make decisions.  Heroin poses special problems for those who inject it because of the risks of HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other diseases that can occur from sharing needles. These health problems can be passed on to sexual partners and newborns.

Signs someone is on heroin:

Euphoria, drowsiness, impaired mental functioning, slowed down respiration, constricted pupils, and nausea

Sings of Overdose:
Coma, convulsions, pinpoint pupils, clammy skin, and shallow breathing

Heroin is one of the top two frequently reported drugs by medical examiners in drug abuse deaths.
