There are misconceptions regarding what make a person a drug or alcohol addict, some have thought that if a person needs or if used on a daily basis was an addict. Or if only withdrawal symptoms were present (vomiting, cramps, seizures) were signs of an addict. As well has the type of people who become addicts, the unemployed, poor, inner city kids.

These are misconceptions that can be proven wrong.  Drug and alcohol effects people from all walks of life.  People with an addiction do not have to use drugs and or alcohol on a daily basis, which some won’t encounter withdrawal symptoms when they stop.  And a lot of addicts can still hold a job with a very good income and appear to be drug and alcohol free.

Three aspects which characterize addiction are:

    1. Loss of control: No addict can control what can happen while using a mind-mood alternating substance. One day it may seem easy to stop after one drink, or after one line of cocaine; the next day it's a total different story and the control can be totally out which means the addict can overuse the substance.

    2. Compulsive preoccupation: The addict will unremarkably loose a large quantity of time just thinking, dwelling about the substance and how to get it.

    3. Continued use despite negative consequences: If substance abuse creates relationship and money problems but the person sill continues using, then its safe to say that the individual is addicted or is heading fast towards a heavy addiction. At that point the person has the control of the substance is lost.

A nonuser or casual alcohol/drug user may have difficulty in comprehending why a person won’t stop using drugs and/or alcohol when they’re in trouble. When you have the use and abuse of mood and mind altering drugs, it might appear to be voluntary, when it often becomes out of the control of the individual; addiction seems to be characterized by involuntary, compulsive behaviour, therefore use. Most of all addicts cannot stop by themselves and will not stop on the ideal they are addicted.

There have been many discussions and arguments over what causes addiction. Historically, it was conceived that addiction was generated by lack of willpower, by poverty, moral weakness, mental illness, genetics, family socialization, anti-social personalities, and societal problems. Some scientists believe drug addiction is an illness, despite the fact that evidences prove this theory extremely weak.

  • The Drug: All drugs have a different addiction level. This is due to the pharmacology of the substance, and how it affects and controls the mood and mind of the user.

  • The Addict: People who have low self-esteem, who carry a lot of shame and guilt, seem to have a higher addiction rate. People will use psychoactive substances to deal with life in a more pleasurable state, or to try to numb or block the constant emotional pain they carry with them through life. When a person feels great about themselves they are less likely to abuse or use mind-mood alternating substances. Sadly we live in a society that has easy access to drugs, which for those who are “addicted-prone” due to emotional or physical pain and has unclear norms and pro-use, is ultimately a society that will soon become full of addicts.

  • The Environment: In society, we hear mixed reviews regarding the use of drugs. Those such as alcohol and tobacco are accepted while others are condemned.  Some drug use is even promoted as a popular media tactic, along with other parts of the country having diverse standards regarding drugs and alcohol.  This is the kind of stuff that makes society become desensitized concerning drug use.

Prescription drug use as well as illegal narcotics alike contributes to addictive personalities.  Drug addiction is the final stage of a story.  Throughout the addict encounters many experiences, which ultimately lead to substance abuse, and finally addiction.

Community organizations, rehabilitation and prevention programs are available to assist the addict with their problem, as well as offering support to the addict’s family/friends.  These programs assist the parties involved with addiction education, intervention methods, and rehabilitation.
